UK-Based Nigerian Man Sparks Debate After Wife Asks for Monthly Upkeep Despite Earning this amount
A Nigerian man living in the United Kingdom has sparked debate on social media after sharing a financial disagreement with his wife over monthly upkeep despite both of them earning an income.
The anonymous story, shared by a relationship commentator, explained that the man relocated his family to the UK after selling his house and landed properties in Nigeria to finance the move.
According to him, he earns £2,000 per month after tax, while his wife, who is in the UK on a dependant visa, earns £1,700 monthly after tax.
He said the couple agreed that his salary would be used to cover all household bills, while his wife would contribute to part of the family’s food expenses and save the remainder of her income.
However, he said he was recently surprised when his wife asked why, as her husband, he was not giving her a separate monthly allowance for personal expenses such as hair and nail appointments.
According to him, she asked:
“As a responsible man, shouldn’t you be giving me money for my upkeep, like for my hair and nails, every month?”
The husband said the question left him speechless because, after paying the family’s bills, he has little or nothing left for himself.
“All my salary goes to bills here in the UK, and I don’t even have anything left over to buy beer for myself,” he reportedly said.
He also claimed that after relocating, he personally helped his wife secure employment by handling her job applications, preparing her for interviews and assisting with workplace training.
The man further alleged that he recently turned down an opportunity for his wife to obtain a higher-paying civil service job through one of his friends because he feared that earning more money might negatively affect her attitude.
His story has generated mixed reactions online. While some social media users argued that a husband should still provide personal upkeep for his wife regardless of her income, others maintained that since both spouses earn comparable salaries, financial responsibilities should be shared more equally.
