A 34-year-old resident of Rikkos community in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State, Saleh Gambazi, left his home on Friday evening but was found dead hours later.
Gambazi, also known as Saeed, reportedly failed to return home that night, causing members of his family to become worried.
His remains were later found abandoned around Bauchi Ring Road and subsequently taken to the morgue of the Old Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH).
The circumstances surrounding his death remained unclear, while the motive for the killing was yet to be established.
The deceased’s younger sister was the first member of the family to receive information about the incident after she called his telephone number.
She said an unidentified person answered the call and told her that Gambazi had been killed.
“When I dialled his number, someone picked up the call. I asked about the owner of the phone, but was told to take heart as the owner had been killed.
“He told me that my brother was stabbed in the back and died on getting to the hospital.
“I asked how we could recover the body and he told me to go to Anguwan Rukuba Police Post. Thereafter, we were directed to the Nassarawa Police Division. From there, we were taken to the morgue where we took his body for burial,” she said.
The family said several attempts to reach Gambazi failed after his telephone became unreachable.
His father, Saleh Abdu Gambazi, described his son as peaceful, dedicated and focused, saying his death had left the family traumatised.
“I got to know about his death through my wife because I left my phone at home. She followed me to a neighbouring house to inform me about the incident.
“My son was calm and jovial; everyone can attest to that. The loss is traumatising and painful. The way he was killed was so sad. Nothing will clear off the pain because we did not expect such a thing.
“I will live to remember him. It is not only me; all members of the family feel the same,” he said.
The deceased’s mother, Hajaratu Abubakar Aminu, also expressed grief over the loss, describing her son’s death as tragic and painful.
“I was confused over this; I have lost a son who will be remembered at all times. Only God knows the degree of the loss,” she said.
She recalled that she last saw Gambazi at home while he was boiling water for a bath before she left to visit a mourning neighbour.
According to her, she instructed him to lock the main entrance of the house before she left.
The family said the identities of those responsible for the killing remained unknown.
They added that the police had assured them that investigation would continue until the perpetrators were identified, arrested and brought to justice.
