The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has commenced investigation into an altercation involving personnel of the Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO) and commercial motorcyclists, popularly known as Okada riders, in the Life Camp area of Abuja.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, September 17, 2026, at about 7:00 p.m., amid enforcement of the ban on commercial motorcycle operations on major roads and routes within the FCT.
In a statement issued by the Command’s Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, the police said preliminary investigations indicated that the confrontation started when a VIO officer attached to a task force constituted by the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) to enforce the ban had an altercation with a commercial motorcyclist.
According to the Command, the disagreement subsequently escalated into a confrontation, prompting police authorities to commence an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, CP Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, has ordered an immediate and comprehensive investigation to establish what transpired.
The Command said further information would be made available as the investigation progresses.
It added that normalcy had been restored to the Life Camp area, urging residents to remain calm and continue with their lawful activities without fear.
The police also advised FCT residents to remain security-conscious and report suspicious persons or activities to the nearest police station or through the Command’s emergency lines
