Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz is set to sign a new two-year contract to continue leading Ghana beyond the expiration of his current deal on July 31, 2026, with his primary mandate being to end the country’s 45-year wait for a continental football title.
The extension, backed by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, follows consultations between the two institutions after reviewing Ghana’s performance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Under the new deal, the 73-year-old Portuguese tactician would lead the Black Stars through the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, where Ghana last won continental glory in 1982.
Carlos Queiroz was appointed on an initial four-month contract in April 2026 following the dismissal of Otto Addo, tasked primarily with guiding Ghana through its World Cup campaign.
He oversaw five matches in charge, recording one win, two draws and two defeats, guiding the Black Stars to the knockout stage for the first time since 2010 before a narrow 1-0 defeat to Colombia ended their campaign in the Round of 32.
The extension talks come days after Queiroz publicly denied rumours that he had resigned, clarifying that an emotional social media post following Ghana’s World Cup exit had been misinterpreted as a farewell message.
Sports Minister Kofi Adams had earlier signalled the government’s openness to retaining Carlos Queiroz, citing strong public support for the coach following his World Cup showing.
Ghana’s AFCON qualifying campaign is set to begin in September with an away fixture against Côte d’Ivoire, followed by a home match against Gambia, before further qualifiers against Somalia, Côte d’Ivoire and Gambia. An official announcement confirming Queiroz’s new deal is expected in the coming days.
