Edo Police Restricts Movement For Saturday LG Elections

BENIN – The Edo State Police Command has announced a statewide re­striction of movement ahead of the Local Government Council Elections scheduled for Saturday, July 11, 2026.

In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eno Ikoedem, the Command said the restriction will take ef­fect from 12:00 midnight (0000hrs) and remain in force until 6:00 p.m. (1800hrs) on election day.

According to the statement, the restriction forms part of comprehensive security mea­sures put in place by the Police, in collaboration with other security agencies, to ensure a peaceful, or­derly, and secure electoral process across the state.

The Command explained that the measure is aimed at pro­tecting voters, electoral officials, and sensitive election materials, while preventing any breakdown of law and order during the polls.

During the restriction peri­od, all vehicular and pedestrian movement across Edo State will be prohibited, except for officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), accredited election observers, duly accredited media person­nel, security agencies, emergency responders, and other essential service providers on official elec­tion duty.

The Police advised residents to comply strictly with the directive, noting that security personnel have been strategically deployed across the 18 Local Government Areas to enforce the restriction and maintain public order.

The Command warned that anyone found violating the re­striction or engaging in activities capable of disrupting the elector­al process would be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.

The Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, reassured residents that adequate security arrangements have been put in place to safeguard lives, property, and the integrity of the election.

He urged eligible voters to come out peacefully and exercise their civic responsibility in line with the guidelines issued by the Edo State Independent Electoral Commission (EDSIEC), reaffirm­ing the Command’s commitment to ensuring a free, fair, peaceful, and credible local government election.
