AI Could Pose Serious Risks To Humanity – Anthropic CEO Urges AI Industry To Slow Down Development

- Anthropic CEO and cofounder Dario Amodei has acknowledged that artificial intelligence carries serious risks, saying the industry has not been sufficiently honest with the public about the dangers.
- He called for slower development, stronger testing, independent evaluation and government oversight while arguing that advanced AI should not be completely banned because of its potential benefits.
Anthropic CEO and cofounder Dario Amodei has warned that artificial intelligence poses “real dangers”, urging the industry to slow down the pace of development and properly test increasingly powerful AI models.
Speaking about the rapid progress of the technology, Amodei admitted that even he had been surprised by how quickly AI capabilities were advancing.
“I won’t lie to you there are real dangers,” he said, describing the exponential growth of AI as “a warning sign” for the industry.
His comments came after former Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon warned about the potential dangers of self-improving superintelligence, claiming AI “will be smart enough to k+ll us.”
Amodei stressed that slowing down does not mean stopping AI development completely. Instead, he said every new generation of models should be “properly tested” before being widely deployed.
Anthropic plans to give independent evaluators permanent “employee-like” access to its AI models so they can assess whether the company is meeting its safety commitments.
Amodei also backed federal regulation and said an AI “kill switch” could be useful. However, he opposed a complete ban on advanced AI, citing its potential benefits, including medical breakthroughs.
He further called for international cooperation to create a “speed limit” for AI development, while acknowledging the difficulty of reaching such an agreement.
The Anthropic boss also expressed concern about the concentration of such powerful technology in private companies, saying he supports “some kind of oversight” and “some kind of joint governance” involving democratically elected governments.
