The Federal Government has announced that eligible Nigerian students will receive 100MB of free data every day from October 1, 2026, for access to approved educational platforms and digital learning content.
The Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, announced this in Abuja on Thursday during the launch of the Initiative for Zero-Rated Access to Educational Platforms and Content in Nigeria.
Alausa said the programme would initially cover students in public senior secondary schools and tertiary institutions, with about five million learners expected to benefit in the first phase.
“Let me let out the secret. This will be made available to Nigerian students from October 1st, 2026,” the minister said.
Under the initiative, participating telecommunications operators will provide the students with a daily 100MB allowance that can be used to access approved educational websites and digital learning platforms.
The Federal Government said the initiative is aimed at reducing the cost of internet access and making digital education more accessible to students, particularly those from low-income households.
The announcement has sparked mixed reactions online, with some Nigerians questioning whether 100MB would be enough for students, while others welcomed the initiative.
